A Student team-building program that was inspired by the impact that colleges and universities have experienced promoting positive, healthy and pro-social behaviors. Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) in Long Isl., New York, developed Students United For Safe Schools, (SUSS) based on a social norms approach to changing social norms in schools. In this approach, appropriate pro-social behaviors are not only encouraged and modeled, but become perceived by students as the accepted way to behave. As the perception takes hold, behavior conforms throughout the school community. Research shows this approach reduces bullying and social exclusion, and SUSS's experience has been that students who participate are empowered and help to create a school community where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.
