Some defining social media research

Two defining works about youth and social media, one from the field's earliest years in the first decade of this century and one by an author who helped shape the field are Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out: Kids Living and Learning with New Media from MIT Press and It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens, a 2014 book from Yale University Press. The former, edited by media professor Mizuko Ito, is the result of three years of research by more than 2 dozen researchers on young people's use of social media at home, school and in after school programs. The latter, by researcher danah boyd, is the culmination of six years of criss-crossing the country, talking with and observing young people in person and in social media.
